She's Not Your Girlfriend: How Thai Bar Girls Really See You
She smiles when you walk in. She remembers your name, she laughs at your jokes, and she tells you you're not like the other customers. And you want to believe that.
So let me tell you how she really sees you.
First, understand the job: she's at work
She's at work. That bar is her office, you're the customer, and she's good at what she does.
And I don't mean that in a bad way. I mean she's a professional, and most guys who walk in there are amateurs.
What a bar girl reads in the first minute
A professional reads you fast. In the first minute she knows a lot about you.
- Is it your first time in Thailand?
- Are you alone, or with friends?
- Are you careful with your money, or throwing it around?
- And how badly do you want to be liked?
That last one matters the most.

The three boxes every customer ends up in
From there, she puts you in a box. And there are really only three boxes.
The tourist. He's here for a week, he doesn't know the prices, and tonight is the only night that counts. So tonight is expensive.
The regular. He comes back, he knows how it works, he's easy and he's fair. And he gets the best version of her, because he's worth more over a year than the tourist is in one night.
The guy who fell in love. That guy is not a customer anymore. That guy is a project.

The customer she actually likes
So what does she actually like? It's not what you think. It's not the biggest tipper, and it's not the best looking guy in the room.
It's the easy customer.
- Clean and polite.
- Clear about what he wants.
- Pays what was agreed.
- Doesn't make drama.
That guy gets treated well everywhere, and he pays less than the guy who's trying to impress her.

By the way. All of this, and a lot more, is in my Thailand Guide, so you know it before you land and not after.
Is any of it real?
Now, the part nobody likes to hear. Is any of it real? The smile, the messages, the "I miss you"?
My honest answer: it's real the way a good waiter is really friendly. She can like you. A lot of them do like their regulars. And it's still her job.
A transaction dressed up as a relationship is still a transaction. And that's fine. Both of you can have a great night, as long as nobody pretends it's something else.
The trouble starts when you pretend. When you think you're the exception. And the whole business is built to make you feel like the exception, so every guy in that bar tonight feels like the exception.
When it goes further, and money starts to travel after the trip, you're in the sponsor trap.
How I'd handle it: be the regular
Be the regular, even on your first night. That means:
- You agree on everything before.
- You pay what you agreed, and not more.
- You're friendly, and you don't try to buy her interest, because you can't.
- And you never ask her if she likes you. You're paying her to say yes.

Don't judge it after one night
And don't judge the whole thing after one night either. I have a rule for that, the Rule of Ten. Don't make up your mind about pay for play until you've had about ten experiences, because the first few tell you nothing. Some are great, and some are a letdown.
So is she your girlfriend?
No. Is that a problem? Only if you needed her to be.
I believe enjoyment is reality minus expectations. The guy who knows exactly what this is has a much better time than the guy who's hoping.
She's not your girlfriend. She's a professional. So be a good customer, and you'll get the best night that street has to offer.
