7 Thailand Scams That Still Work in 2026 (And the Fix)

The scam that costs you the most in Thailand is not loud. Nobody grabs you. Nobody threatens you. You say thank you, and you pay.

I will get to that one. It is number one on this list. But first, six others that still work on smart guys in 2026. For each one you get how it works, and the one move that stops it.

One thing first. This is not Thailand bashing. I have lived there for years and I think it is the best place in the world for a single man. But you are walking into a nightlife economy that is built to take money from foreign men. You can have a great time inside it. Plenty of guys do. You just need your head switched on.

The 7 scams in short

  • 7. The long way round: agree on the meter before the car moves.
  • 6. The drink she chose: you pick the place. Always.
  • 5. The upstairs show: do not follow a man with a menu up a staircase.
  • 4. The bill in the dark: ask the price before you order, and check every slip.
  • 3. The free shot: never take a drink you did not see being poured.
  • 2. The scooter: too drunk to ride is too drunk to sit on the back. Take a car.
  • 1. The long game: the moment you believe you are the exception, you are the target.

Number 7: the long way round

You get into a taxi or a tuk tuk. You say where you want to go. And then you get a tour of the city that you did not order.

Or the tuk tuk version. The price is surprisingly low, and on the way you stop at a shop. A tailor. A jewelry store. Just five minutes. The driver gets paid for bringing you. You get twenty minutes of sales pressure.

This one is small money. I put it last for a reason. But it eats time, and time is the thing you cannot get back.

The move. Know roughly how far it is before you get in. Open the map on your phone and let it run. And for a taxi, agree on the meter or on a fixed price before the car moves. If he says no, close the door and take the next one. There is always a next one.

Number 6: the drink she chose

You know about lady drinks. In a gogo bar or a beer bar, if you want to sit with a girl, you pay for her drink, and it costs more than yours. That is on the menu. That is fair.

Here is the version that is not on the menu.

You meet a girl outside. On the street, or in what looks like a normal club. One of you says, let's get a drink. And she knows a place. It is close.

You sit. You talk. You flirt. Then the bill comes. Your water is 100 Baht. Her vodka is 250.

What happened? She took you to a place that sells lady drinks, and she earns a commission for bringing you. You were in a bar system without knowing it.

It is not very common. But it has happened to me, and to friends of mine.

The move. You pick the place. Always. Never ask her to recommend a random spot nearby.

Number 5: the upstairs show

This one is famous, and it still works every single night.

You are walking through the Patpong night market in Bangkok. A man steps up with a laminated menu. A show. And on the menu it says, no cover charge.

Upstairs you order a beer. On the menu it was 100 Baht. Then the bill comes, and there are charges on it for things you did not know existed. You want to complain? There are a few big guys standing between you and the door.

One of my viewers went through a version of this. A friendly tout offered to show him some bars. It ended with $60 for six beers. He paid, because he had counted three men watching him.

The move. Do not follow a man with a menu up a staircase. That is the whole rule. The bars on the ground floor, with the door open to the street, are a different story. More in Soi Cowboy vs Nana Plaza vs Patpong.

Number 4: the bill in the dark

This is the quiet cousin of number five, and it happens in normal bars too.

You have been drinking for three hours. You have bought a few lady drinks. Maybe someone at the table ordered a round you did not notice. Then you ask for the bill, and it is one long slip of paper in bad light.

A bill at the end of a long night is designed to confuse a drunk man in a dark room.

And in the venues with no prices on the menu, it is not confusion. It is the business model. The number is whatever they think you will pay, and security is there to back it up.

The move. Three parts. Ask the price before you order, every time. If there are no prices and nobody will tell you, leave. And pay round by round, or at least check the slips every round. In most bars they put each slip in a cup on your table. Look at them while you can still count.

And if it happens anyway? You do not argue about a bill at four in the morning. You pay, you leave, and you never go back. The tricks in detail: The Bill That Grows by Itself.

By the way. Knowing which venues are fair and which ones have this reputation is most of the game. That is what I marked on the interactive maps in my Thailand Guide. Bangkok, Pattaya and Phuket, over 500 pins.

Number 3: the free shot

Now it gets serious, because this one is not about money.

Two things can be in your drink that should not be there.

The first is something that knocks you out. A girl buys you a drink. Or someone puts something in your glass while you look the other way. You wake up without your phone, your wallet, and your watch, and without the last six hours.

The second is methanol. Cheap alcohol that was stretched with something poisonous. You may remember the backpackers who died in Laos at the end of 2024. Free shots at a hostel. The symptoms came 12 to 24 hours later, and by then it was too late for some of them.

That was Laos. But fake alcohol has turned up in bars across the region for years. The risk is highest in the cheapest places. The ones with free shots at the door, and no prices on the menu.

The move. Never take a drink you did not see being poured. Keep your glass in your hand. Be careful with anything that is free. And if a place feels wrong, trust that feeling and go.

Number 2: the scooter

This is not a scam in the usual sense. Nobody is tricking you. But it takes more from tourists than everything else on this list together, so it belongs here.

Around 20,000 people die on the roads in Thailand every year. About three out of four of them are on two or three wheels.

Here is how it gets you. It is hot. Everybody is on a motorbike. The rental shop is right there, and it costs almost nothing per day. You have ridden a bicycle. How hard can it be? You have also had three beers.

And there is the money side. Some rental shops want to keep your passport. Then, when you bring the bike back, there is suddenly a scratch, and it has a price.

But the version that catches even more guys is this one. You are not driving. It is two in the morning, you open the app, and you pick the motorbike because it is cheaper and faster. He hands you a helmet. Sometimes. You are drunk, you do not ask, and off you go.

After two days in Thailand, that looks completely normal. That is the trap.

The move. If you rent, wear a helmet every single time, take photos of the bike before you leave, and never give your passport as a deposit. And if you are too drunk to ride, you are too drunk to sit on the back. Take a car. It costs a bit more. You will live. Literally.

Number 1: the long game

This is the one from the beginning. The one where you say thank you.

Let me tell you about Joe. Joe is not a newbie. He knows the rules. No money, no honey. He does not buy dinners, and he would never send money to a girl.

Then he meets Apple. Yes, that is a real Thai nickname. She invites him to another bar. Joe knows this trick, see number six, so he plays along to see what happens.

The drinks arrive. And Apple pays for them.

That is not in Joe's script. So his brain finds an explanation. She is different. She really likes me. What I read does not apply to her.

That thought is the beginning of the end. Because now one of three things happens.

  • At the end of the night she expects him to take her for the whole night, and he feels he owes it to her.
  • Or nobody talks about money at all, and in the morning there is a bill he did not expect.
  • Or, the rare one, she asks for nothing. For days. She shows him messages from other guys that she turned down.

And then her phone breaks.

It can be the phone. The rent. A sick relative. The longer she waits, the bigger it is. And in 2026 she has better tools. Voice messages between your trips. She knows when you fly.

I call it the ruthless long game. A small investment up front, a large return later. And it takes down experienced guys more often than newbies, because experienced guys think they cannot be fooled. Where it ends, I describe in the sponsor trap.

The move. Knowledge. Once you have seen the pattern, you notice the first step. And remember, it is a transaction. A transaction dressed up as a relationship is still a transaction. That is fine. Both sides can have a great time, as long as nobody pretends.

The moment you believe you are the exception, you are the target.

So here is where it lands

Seven scams. Look at the order again. The loud ones, the taxi, the show, the bill, are at the bottom. They cost you an evening.

The quiet ones are at the top. The drink you did not watch. The scooter. And the girl who paid for the first round.

Common sense beats fear. You do not need to be paranoid in Thailand. You need to pick the place, ask the price, watch your glass, take the car, and remember what the deal is.

Now you know.

If you are planning a trip and you want to know which places are fair, where to stay, and where to go, I have put all of it in one place: the Thailand Guide. 60+ videos, 3 eBooks, and the interactive maps for Bangkok, Pattaya and Phuket, with over 500 pins. One payment, lifetime access.
